Where am I?

In the past two weeks, I have traveled to Kansas twice. Both times I've managed to get myself lost. This is not really difficult for me to do, since I'm a self-proclaimed 'directionally challenged' individual. You would think I might keep a map handy...but no, I'm much too independent and forgetful to own one of those.

The first instance was driving back from my dear sister's apartment last weekend after my brothers wedding. I knew which way to go, but second guessed myself and ended up taking a trek through rural Missouri. I might point out, that once lost in a rural area, exiting and finding a place to ask for directions is quite the challenge. I suppose I could have spoken to a woodland creature, but that was the only life I encountered for many miles. I ended up calling my home and praying that someone would be available to help me out of my predicament. My brother answered (much to my relief) and reassured me that if I kept on the same route, eventually I would run into the highway I desired. Turns out, I'd actually taken this way before -- the last time I got lost. Long story short, I made it back to IA...a little later than hoped, but still in one piece. Sweet success!

A more recent incident was this weekend, in fact yesterday. After assuring my sister and more than one friend that I would not get lost, I managed to do just that. I was even paying attention to the road! To make matters worse, not only did I miss my exit, I took an entirely different highway than I should have. Landmarks don't look as familiar in the dark. Needless to say, I realized I was lost and attempted to call for help, only to discover that I had no service on my phone. Instead of pulling off and finding an establishment, I kept driving until service returned. So now, not only did I not know where I was, I was rather certain I would have to backtrack to get to where I needed to be. Sure enough, my exit had been twenty miles earlier. My sister (who owns an atlas) directed me to where I needed to be, by giving step by step directions and repeating them several times. I managed to make it to Lawrence, but then got disoriented and had to pull into a liquor store parking lot to figure out which way I was going. I finally arrived, relieved to be in a familiar setting. I think I'll let my sister do the driving from here on out...

Did I mention I also locked myself out of my apartment? What a day!
