God works in mysterious ways

There is no such thing as coincidence, only the sovereign plan of my heavenly Father. Last weekend several things happened that fell together in such a way that there was no mistaking the hand of God in my plans.

About a month ago, I met with a former teacher to talk about my desire to serve in Uganda someday. During the course of our conversation we discussed sustainability and the importance of making a lasting difference, rather than just providing a quick fix for the issues facing people in third world countries. She mentioned an opportunity to attend an expo of various non-profit organizations coming together to collaborate and learn from each other. I was so excited about the possibility, that I immediately asked time off work for that Friday. As it turned out, I was not able to attend, but God had something in process that I couldn't have dreamed.

My dad is in a singing group that travels occasionally and they had a concert in Northeastern Colorado that same Friday night. Since my sister had the day free, I went up and spent some time with her and her hubby and then we drove to the middle of nowhere for the concert. I was excited about having a free day, spending time with family, and getting to hear my dad sing.

Earlier in the week I spoke to my mom, and she told me her cousin and his wife were coming to the concert as well. At the time I didn't think much of it. The last time I saw these people was after I spent the night in the ER with my mom when she broke her hip skiing this March. Needless to say, I was less than coherent and probably only running on a few hours of sleep at the time, so we only talked for a few minutes and I barely remember the content of that conversation. I had no idea the extent of the conversation we were about to have, or how many similar interests were present.

So, three rather unlikely events came to pass. I was off on a Friday, my dad was coming to Colorado and I had the opportunity to talk with an extended family member...at length. I knew all of these details beforehand, and really didn't think much of the convergence because it seemed rather insignificant at the time.

Unbeknownst to me however, this family member (let's call her Kathy) has connections to Uganda. I've mentioned my interest and the growing desire in my heart to be able to impact lives in this beautiful country. Not only did Kathy have connections with leaders in Uganda, she has also been there and, get this -- she is a nurse. What better perspective for me to be privileged to hear? I shared my heart, how God has been working in and through me. And though I know I'm on a long road to my 'final' destination, I expressed an interest in visiting or being involved in a short term trip before the possible reality of settling there for longer. Her response? (This still amazes me) She told me that if I am really serious about going to Uganda, she can most likely find a group for me to accompany AND supply funding for said trip. So...I am supposed to let her know when I'm ready.

Will you pray with me for wisdom regarding this decision and awesome opportunity? The biggest obstacle was always the cost of traveling, everything else can be worked out fairly easily with a little bit of planning. God reminded me that He sees and knows my heart and nothing is impossible for Him to accomplish. Once again, I'm dreaming, learning to hope, and trusting that my heavenly Father knows best. I will update as soon as I know more.
